What Are Pressure Hoses?

Pressure hoses are commonly used in airplanes. From light aircraft to twin-aisle wide-body aircraft, many airplanes feature them in their construction. Pressure hoses may look like ordinary fluid-carrying hoses, but they are designed specifically for use with pressurized systems.

The Basics of Pressure Hoses

Pressure hoses are heavy-duty hoses that are designed to withstand a certain amount of pressure. The amount of pressure they can withstand is typically measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). Some pressure hoses can withstand 1,000 PSI of pressure, whereas others can withstand up to 3,000 PSI of pressure.

Common Applications for Pressure Hoses

Pressure hoses are used in many different applications. They are often used for motor oil, for instance. When the respective motor is turned off and not running, the motor oil typically won’t be pressurized. But once the motor begins to run, the oil with which it’s used will heat up. As the temperature of the motor oil increases, so will its pressure. The motor oil will become pressurized.

In addition to motor oil, pressure hoses are often used for coolant. Some motors feature a liquid cooling system. The term “coolant” is used to describe the water-based liquid in these cooling systems. Coolant will flow through the motor, and after gathering heat, it will travel to a radiator. Pressure hoses are commonly used to connect motors to radiators.

How to Choose Pressure Hoses

Pay attention to the PSI rating when choosing pressure hoses. As previously mentioned, some of them can withstand more pressure than others. The PSI rating will reveal how much pressure a pressure hose can safely withstand.

You should choose pressure hoses in the right size. The diameter of the inner tube must match that of the outlet with which you intend to use a given pressure hose.

In addition to the tube diameter, you should consider the length when choosing pressure hoses. They must be long enough to connect the equipment together. If you’re looking for a pressure hose to use with a motor and radiator, for example, you’ll need to ensure that it’s long enough to collect the motor and radiator.

Pressure hoses are available in different materials. Steel wire braid is a popular material in which they are made. Pressure hoses made of steel wire braid are strong and flexible. You can bend them without fear of puncturing the inner tube. And steel wire braid pressure hoses such as this won’t succumb to damage when exposed to oil.
