#1) Only Partially Threaded
While other types of screws are available in fully threaded and partially threaded styles, sheet metal screws are always fully threaded. They feature external threads from the head to the tip. With their fully threaded shank, sheet metal screws provide better grip and retention than other types of screws.
#2) Require a Pilot Hole
You don’t always have to drill a pilot hole when using sheet metal screws. Most sheet metal screws are self-tapping. They feature a sharp, pointed tip that’s able to create its own threads. As you drive a sheet metal screw into a piece of sheet metal, the pointed tip will dig out material while creating its own threads.
#3) Can Only Be Used in Sheet Metal
Contrary to what the name implies, sheet metal screws aren’t limited to metal sheets; they can be used in other materials. You can use them to fasten wooden objects, for instance. Many people, in fact, prefer to use sheet metal screws for wooden objects because they are available in self-tapping styles. Keep in mind that while sheet metal screws can be used with wood, wood screws can’t be used with metal.

Another common myth is that sheet metal screws offer little or no resistance to corrosion. While certain types of sheet metal screws, such as high-carbon screws, are susceptible to corrosion, most of them are highly resistant to corrosion. There are stainless steel, aluminum and zinc-plated sheet metal screws, for instance, all of which are highly resistant to corrosion.
#5) Can’t Be Reused
Think sheet metal screws can’t be reused? Think again. Most sheet metal screws are made of strong materials. After all, they are designed to cut into sheet metal. Therefore, you can remove them without damaging or deforming their external threads.
#6) Only Used for Temporary Fastening
Sheet metal screws aren’t used exclusively for temporary fastening applications. You can use them for both temporary and permanent fastening applications. With their strong construction and fully threaded shank, they are very versatile. Sheet metal screws can cut through wooden and metal objects while offering a long-term and reliable fastening solution.
