Jo-bolts play a critical role in the aerospace industry. Also known as internally threaded three-piece rivets, they are used to create permanent joints. Jo-bolts are mechanical fasteners that, once installed, hold two or more objects together. While there are many other types of mechanical fasteners, however, Jo-bolts offer several benefits that make them a popular choice for airplanes and other aircraft.

#1) Superior Strength

Jo-bolts offer very strong joints that can withstand vibrations without loosening. All Jo-bolts consist of three basic parts: a threaded bolt, a threaded steel nut and an expandable sleeve. During installation, the bolt is turned while the nut remains stationary, which causes the sleeve to expand over the nut while simultaneously clamping against the workpiece.

#2) Multiple Head Styles

You can find Jo-bolts in different head styles. Some of them have a protruding head, for instance, whereas others have a flush head. Protruding heads essentially stick out of the workpiece in which they are installed. Flush heads, in comparison, sit flush with the workpiece’s surface, resulting in a clean finish that many people prefer.

#3) Corrosion Resistant

Corrosion isn’t an issue with Jo-bolts. They are typically made of corrosion-resistant materials, such as stainless steel. Stainless steel is an iron alloy with at least 10.5% chromium. This chromium reacts to the surrounding environment to form a protective outer layer. As a result, you can use Jo-bolts in humid environments without fear of them corroding or rusting.

#4) Only Requires Front Access

You don’t need access to both the front and back of the workpiece to install a Jo-bolt. Jo-bolts are classified as blind fasteners that, like other blind fasteners, only require access to the front. This is in stark contrast to traditional fasteners, which require access to both the front and back. If you use a bolt to create a joint, for example, you’ll need to access the back of the workpiece to attach a nut. Jo-bolts offer a simpler installation process that eliminates the need for rear access.

#5) Weight Reduction

Jo-bolts offer weight reduction benefits as well. They weigh less than many other types of fasteners. In aerospace-related applications, even minor weight reductions can have a major impact on fuel efficiency. Commercial airlines spend about one-quarter of their total operating expenses on fuel. By using Jo-bolts, airlines can achieve lighter and more fuel-efficient airplanes.
