Also known as eyelets, they are commonly used with cables. Rather than running a cable directly over a sharp edge, such as the back of a desk, you can run the cable through a grommet.

Grommets are typically soft. Even if a cable or wire rubs against the inside of a grommet, it won’t wear down. The soft properties of grommets will protect cables and wires from friction-related damage. If you’re planning to use a grommet, however, you’ll need to choose the right one.

Material

Grommets are available in different materials. Because they are designed to protect parts from friction-related damage, you should choose a grommet made of a soft material. Synthetic rubber is a popular material for grommets. It’s a type of artificial elastomer that’s made from petroleum byproducts. When made of synthetic rubber, grommets are soft, elastic and durable.

Chemical Resistance

Depending on where you intend to use it, you may want to choose a chemical-resistant grommet. Grommets used in commercial applications are often exposed to chemicals like oils and solvents. Chemicals such as these can quickly degrade grommets, and once degraded, a grommet may fail to protect the cable or wire running through it.

There are chemical-resistant grommets, such as silicone rubber grommets, that can withstand chemicals. They won’t melt, deform or otherwise degrade when exposed to chemicals.

Groove Size

Don’t overlook the groove size when choosing a grommet. Most grommets aren’t entirely flat and smooth on the sides. Instead, they have a shallow groove. This groove allows grommets to fit securely in cutouts. You can cut a hole with a notch in the equipment with which you want to install a grommet. You can then place the grommet in this hole. The groove will align with the hole’s notch to create a secure fit.

Hole Size

In addition to the size of the groove, you should consider the size of the hole when choosing a grommet. It reflects the size of the open space or hole in the center of the grommet. A large hole size means you’ll be able to run large cables or wires through the grommet. Keep in mind, though, that grommets with a large hole size will require a large cutout for installation. Measure the diameter of the hole and choose a grommet that fits snugly.

Grommets offer a simple and effective way to protect parts from friction-related damage.
